“How can I help Delara Darabi?” (1)
by David ET on Feb.17, 2007, under Uncategorized
Here are suggestions for how to write officials in the UN, EU or your government about Delara Darabi. The addresses you can send the letters to are listed at the bottom.
- Give a short summary of Delara Darabi’s case and why you are writing.
- Ask them to contact the Iranian government and demand that Delara’s death
sentence is commuted immediately.
- Ask them to point out that reports are saying that Delara has retracted her
confession and has explained that she only confessed to save her boyfriend from
a death sentence, believing she could not be executed since she was a minor.
Reports are saying Delara’s initial confession was the basis for her sentence.
- Tell them that you are extremely concerned about her health and her conditions
in the prison, as she tried to take her own life at January 20, and her mother has
told that she is severely depressed and only weight 35 kilos. Ask that they urge
the Iranian authorities to take steps to better her conditions at once.
- Ask the organization you are writing to point out to Iran’s government that
Delara was only 17 years old when the crime she is sentenced for happened.
According to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which
Iran is a signatory, they have undertaken not to impose death sentences for
crimes committed by persons below 18 years of age.
- Tell that according to Amnesty International there are at least 22 other youths
sentenced to death for crimes committed before they turned 18
(full list here: http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGMDE130022007).
Together with Pakistan Iran was the only country that still executed minors in
2006.
- Ask them to call on the Iranian authorities to implement the recommendations of
the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, which called on Iran in
January 2005 to “immediately suspend the execution of all death penalties
imposed on persons for having committed a crime before the age of 18, and to
abolish the death penalty as a sentence imposed on persons for having committed
crimes before the age of 18, as required by article 37 of the Convention”.

seriously.
Sending a physical letter or a fax makes a bigger impact than an e-mail, but
everything helps. Try to personalize your letter if you have the time.
