“Land of the Free” …..no more !

by David ET on Feb.29, 2008, under Uncategorized

According to a newly published report, 2,319,258 Americans were behind bars as of January 2008. This means 1 in 99 Americans currently reside in Federal, State or local prisons!
In order to put this alarming number in to perspective, I decided to compare the US inmate population to the population of the states and cities within America. Here is the conclusion:

16 of the 50 US states have less population than the 2.3 million Americans who are behind bars! In other words if all the US inmates are put in to one state, their numbers would slightly be less than the whole population of the state of Nevada but more than either states of: New Mexico, West Virginia, Nebraska, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont or Wyoming. The number of US prisoners are higher than the population of the last 4 listed states combined!

- Comparing to the US cities, a city filled with US inmates would rank as the 4th populated city in the United States, only falling behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The city of inmates would have more population that other major US cities such as Houston, Phoenix, San Diego, Dallas, Detroit, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Denver or San Jose.

The document also reported that the United States incarcerates more people than any other nation, far ahead of more populous China which has 1.5 million people behind bars. The US is also among the world leaders in capital punishment. According to Amnesty International, its 53 executions in 2006 were exceeded only by China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq and Sudan. (Iran executes higher percentage of its population than any other country)

While the United States government (or the land of the free as she still wish to be called !) is blaming the people of the middle east and the rest of the world for its lack of sense of security , it is quietly putting more and more of its own disenfranchised population behind bars. Unless America quickly address the source of it’s growing social problems, it may soon find out that the true challenge to the it’s security, does not reside outside the US borders but within America….and by noone but the millions of Americans who have been left behind. 2.3 million of them already behind bars and many others: not yet!.

Many US inmates are released much earlier than the term of their verdict due to the overcrowding and if there were enough room available, the actual number of inmates would have substantially been higher than 2.3 million .
But if US chose to continue this path; in order to deal with the prison overcrowding, it can always consider forming a new country to exile all of its inmates to. Then let them become armed by international arm dealers as well as by Russia, China, Iran etc and then US can attack its new enemy but now as a foreigner! The new country can be called aciremA which would be nothing but a mirror image of America.

Scary how American society in so many ways resembles Iran; Instead of addressing the roots of their self-inflicted social problems and violence, they both incarcerate or execute their citizens.

OPEN LETTER TO HILLARY AND HER SUPPORTERS
By Deanie Mills - February 25, 2008, 1:30PM

Dear Hillary and Supporters,

I didn’t say anything when Nightline did a story about Obama supporters that used old footage of swooning women at Frank Sinatra concerts and screaming teenyboppers at Beatles appearances.

I didn’t even say anything when the correspondent referred to supporters “fainting and tearing their clothes.”

No one to my knowledge has ever torn their clothes at an Obama rally. If anyone does faint, it probably has something to do with standing hours in line, pouring into an arena packed with thousands of other people, the heat from all those bodies crammed close together, and possibly skipping a meal in order to get a good place in line.

I have been to an Obama rally, and I would also like to point out that many, many of the thousands of people in attendance tend to be, like me, middle-aged. We haven’t swooned or fainted over anybody in 40 years.

Still, we Obama supporters endure being referred to in the media as some kind of cult, worshipping a messiah figure. This is patent nonsense and it would be funny if it weren’t taken so seriously by so many in the media and cheerfully egged on by the Clinton campaign.

But I didn’t say anything, either, when a Clinton booster, introducing her at a rally, referred to Obama supporters as, “latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearing trust fund babies.”

The very next day, in fact, the Ohio Teamsters union and the Boilermakers union endorsed Obama. I daresay there’s not a trust fund baby among them.

My son is a former combat Marine with two tours in Iraq under his belt, as is my nephew, who has three tours to Iraq behind him at the ripe old age of 22. They are both Obama supporters.

I dare you to look them in the eye and accuse them of ever wearing Birkenstocks, or of fainting and tearing their clothes at an Obama rally.

Go ahead. I dare ya.

I am 56 years old and live in a very red, rural area of West Texas. I have met many Obama supporters here, and

many of them have crossed over from decades of supporting Republican candidates. Out here in the country, we don’t even know what a latte is. We drink our coffee black, out of a thermos, the way God intended it. Most people drive pickup trucks and SUVs. We wouldn’t be able to FIND a Prius out here.

I know one woman who has voted straight-ticket Republican for the past 30 years, who volunteers countless hours in support of Obama. Go ahead and tell her she’s a “limousine liberal.” Wait a minute first–I’ve got to sell some tickets.

Still, I didn’t say anything as the attacks on a candidate’s SUPPORTERS increased.

And then Hillary, you yourself just had to get into the game, mocking Obama by saying, “Now, I could stand up here and say, let’s just get everybody together, let’s get unified–the sky will open and the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect!”

You got a big laugh from that little performance.

Only now, I have to speak.

All you Hillary supporters…If you really want to see your girl in the Oval Office, and if you’re all able to finagle, say, the Florida and Michigan votes and various superdelegates and enough popular vote to get the nomination…

Then mock us now at your own peril.

If Hillary gets the nomination, YOU WILL NEED US.

You will need all of us who have supported Obama and attended his rallies and made thousands of phone calls to get out the vote, all of us who caucused for him and donated money to him and voted for him and prayed for him.

And I will say this: Obama has attacked you, Hillary, on your policies, which, as you very well know, is pure politics and is fair game. You have attacked his too, and that’s fine.

But he has never attacked you personally, and never EVER has he made disparaging or mocking remarks toward your supporters.

In all my years of following politics and being an activist in Democratic causes, I have never witnessed such a thing from within our own party.

It has to stop.

It’s one thing for the media mythology to take hold and it’s one thing for the right-wingers to launch their mockery and demagoguery and nasty attacks. We have come to expect that from them.

It’s quite another when our own does it.

If you want your girl to get into the White House, and you continue to mock and put down all of us who have worked so hard in support of OUR candidate, then you do so at your own peril.

Because I can tell you right now, when you cross that line, no amount of Clinton nice-making can ever make up for the anger and resentment of good Democrats who’ve been made to feel like nutcases by their own party faithful just because they supported a different candidate.

And if you succeed in pissing off a gigantic chunk of the Democratic electorate, then you had better be fully prepared, not just for the Republicans pouring out in force to vote AGAINST Hillary, but many, many dispirited, disappointed, and disheartened as well as pissed-off Democrats sitting the entire election out.

Keep this up, both on the campaign trail and in snarky blog comments and websites, and we won’t donate money to you, we won’t campaign for you, and we won’t rally for you.

And we won’t vote for you.

One more thing. Every time our own party slowly self-destructs by this kind of divisive win-at-all-costs tactic–making fun of fellow Democrats, attacking them for supporting a different candidate–we give Republicans even more valuable ammunition to use against Obama should he actually win the nomination.

Talking Points Memo even did a video in which they spliced back and forth between remarks made by Hillary and remarks made by John McCain in criticism and mockery of Obama–they were almost identical. I’ve seen her make one statement that he echoes before the day is done.

It’s all politics, yes. But mocking and turning on people in our own party because they’ve chosen to support a different candidate is completely anathema to what the Democratic party stands for, which should be, tolerance and inclusion.

It’s mean, nasty, and unneccessary.

Not only that, but I guarantee, if it does not stop, it will cost us the White House in 2008 and possibly our slim majority in Congress.

This expresses it well, I think:

“I don’t believe we get there by vilifying good allies, with a lifetime record of battling for progressive causes…I am convinced that, our mutual frustrations and strongly-held beliefs notwithstanding, the strategy driving much of Democratic advocacy, and the tone of much of our rhetoric, is an impediment to creating a workable progressive majority in this country.”

That was a quote from Daily Kos, from back on September 30, 2005.

Only Kos didn’t write it.

Barack Obama did.

Mama Sarah Obama !

by David ET on Feb.25, 2008, under Uncategorized

(International Herald Tribune)  KOGELO, Kenya: A barefoot old woman in a ripped dress is sitting on a log in front of her tin-roof bungalow in this remote village in western Kenya, jovially greeting visitors.

Mama Sarah, as she is known around here, lives without electricity or running water. She is illiterate and doesn’t know when she was born. Yet she may have a seat of honor at the next presidential inauguration in Washington - depending on what happens to her step-grandson, Barack Obama.

Mama Sarah cannot communicate with Obama, who calls her his grandmother, because she speaks only her Luo tribal language and a little Swahili. Obama’s Luo is pretty much limited to “musawa,” meaning “how are you?”

People around here are giddy at the prospect of a President Obama.

“I’m up at 4 a.m. or 5 a.m. to listen to BBC news and get the latest on the campaign,” said Nicholas Rajula, who describes himself as a cousin of the senator. “By the way, what’s the latest news about the superdelegates?”

You might think that all Kenyans would be vigorously supporting Obama. But Kenya has been fractured along ethnic lines in the last two months, so now Obama draws frenzied support from the Luo ethnic group of his ancestors, while many members of the rival Kikuyu group fervently support Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The Obamas are better off than most in the area, for Mama Sarah’s house has a tin roof - a step up from the mud huts with thatch roofs that are common in the village. Mama Sarah also has a cell phone, which she charges from a solar panel, and a radio that she uses to follow primaries in America.

But the poverty is unmistakable. Jane Raila, who says she is another relative of the senator’s, was hobbling barefoot with a homemade crutch, for she had been crippled by polio as a child.

“We’re all very excited by the news from the U.S.,” she said. “We stay up late to listen to the news bulletins.”

Obama’s late grandfather is said to have been the first person in the area to wear Western clothes rather than just a loincloth. For a time he converted to Christianity and adopted the family name Johnson.

Later he converted to Islam, taking four wives. Obama’s father, who apparently converted to Catholicism while attending a Roman Catholic school, was also polygamous in keeping with local custom, taking an informal Kenyan wife who preceded Obama’s mother but remained a consort, according to accounts by local people and the senator himself.

The father, also named Barack Hussein Obama, was as much of a pathbreaker as his son. He went from herding goats in Kogelo to studying in Hawaii and at Harvard, even if his career as an economist was frustrated in part by ethnic rivalries.

Obama barely knew his father and does not know his Kenyan relatives well. He has visited Kenya three times, most recently very briefly in 2006.

On his last visit, Obama visited two area schools that had been renamed for him. The intention in renaming the schools seems to have been partly to attract funding. One person after another noted pointedly that it was a shame that a school named for a great American should be so dilapidated.

Some of Obama’s innumerable relatives also see him as a meal ticket. They have made arrangements with a tour group to bring buses of visitors to have tea with Mama Sarah.

They are also trying to raise money from interviews with her. I had made arrangements to visit Mama Sarah weeks ago, and she had agreed to speak. But when I showed up, she said that her children had told her to keep quiet. Frantic phone calls. Fierce arguments. Hints that money might make an interview possible. I didn’t pay. I didn’t get the interview.

That’s O.K. Having seen the poverty in Kogelo, I’m less offended by the outstretched palms than awed by the distance that the Obama family spans.

Frankly, I worry that enemies of Obama will seize upon details like his grandfather’s Islamic faith or his father’s polygamy to portray him as an alien or a threat to American values. But snobbishness and paranoia ill-become a nation of immigrants, where one of our truest values is to judge people by their own merits, not their pedigrees. If we call ourselves a land of opportunity, then Obama’s heritage doesn’t threaten American values but showcases them.

The step-grandson of an illiterate, barefoot woman in this village of mud huts in Africa may be the next president of the United States.

Such mobility - powered by education, immigration and hard work - is cause not for disparagement but for celebration.

The new world order

by David ET on Feb.23, 2008, under Uncategorized

The policies of Federal Reserve Board as a governing financial power of the US and the WORLD (along with few other central banks) , baseless printing of dollar, the formation of European Union, export of US jobs abroad, End of Soviet Empire and cold war, Chinese elite’s entrance to the global capitalistic market , NAFTA and many other such globalizations are the results of a major shift of dominance of FINANCIAL ELITE from US and Western Europe to a borderless global elite who also now include the Oil rich sheiks of middle east, Russians, Chinese and other billionaires who no longer see their interest in the nationalistic pursuit of capital and in competition with one another, but as one global elite who JOINTLY control the financial resources of our world.

In this path former US elite! no longer feel the need to have a financial hegemony but the elite of the world will. The red white and blue has mixed with the green and yellow and others and an American citizen is no longer more important than a Chinese or Arab as far as they are concerned. Wherever there is a more opportunity to PROFIT is where THEY will be or already are! Obviously the greed will create frictions among the elite too but no longer at the cost of jeopordizing their own wealth. After all they enjoy each others company in yachts and glamerous private gatherings more than the company of the THE PEOPLE. The political and religious leaders have always been the tools of the few to control the masses and they will continue to serve their purpose or forced to be changed as needed! The Media is the new tool of the new world order and not tanks.

The matured Western economies with legal, labor and environmental restrictions no longer provide the same opportunities for the rich elite as the newly formed middle classes of South America, Asia, and Middle East and in this process we will continue to see a shift of economic power to those areas where the investor capital will also follow.

Therefore the current economic problems were not a surprise WHATSOEVER to many but an intended outcome of creating more stable and fertile worldwide grounds for new horizons for creation of wealth for a very limited few who control the financial markets of our planet and therefore in charge of the new world order.

The concept of one world government has already been formed financially and the political process is in the works too.

This is not a conspiracy theory but a factual observation based on what has already happened!. The drop in value of real estate and equities or the recession will only hurt the middle class but it does not effect the elite and actually provides opportunity for those who have unlimited cash reserve to acquire the assets of the middle class at substantial discounts, not to mention that Americans have been rubbed of the value of their assets simply by intentional Fed sponsored drop of dollar. The current US deficit and payment of interest by the tax payer to the elite is also serving as this shift of wealth from the middle class to the few.

The beneficiary of wars such as Iraq have been the elite but the ones burdening the costs will remian to be the taxpayers soon. The next rounds of these shift will be served by increase in taxes as well as possible bail outs to be formulated by the soon to be democrat US president.

What one hears on those such as CNBC (owned by GE), the elite and corporate controlled major media may only be what they want us to hear and believe. The newly acquired wall street journal owned by Newscorp, the soon to be centralized stock market with mergers of the exchanges (eg: NYSE/AMEX ) and the formation of International Equity and Hedge Funds, the congressional approvals of the homeland security and wiretapping etc etc are all playing a role in the centralization of power at the cost of loss of individual economic and political liberties.

Yes America WAS beautiful!
