Confessions of an Islamic Republic supporter

(Based on a poem by Pastor Martin Niemoller. Martin Niemoller was a German pastor who had first supported Hitler through his rise but had become disillusioned by him, opposing him.  He was imprisoned for this opposition and released only by The Allies in 1945)

First they came for monarchists

and I did not speak because I was not a monarchist

Then they came for Kurds

and I did not speak because I was not a Kurd

Then they came for the left

and I did not speak because I was not a leftist

Then they came for seculars

and I did not speak because I was not a secular

Then they came for students

and I did not speak because I was not a student

Then they came for trade unionists

and I did not speak because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for Bahai’s

and I did not speak because I was not a Bahai

Then they came for reformists

and I did not speak because I was not a reformist

Then they came for supporters of Islamic Republic

and Monarchists, Kurds, Leftists, Seculars, Students, Trade Unionists, Bahai’s and Reformists spoke for me too
